Annabelle Heron walked to the mouth of the alley, her boot heels clicking hollowly on the rain-dampened pavement. She stopped, looking down the narrow, dark passageway between the tall sides of two buildings. The night was dark, and the light from the street fell only a few yards into the alley. Beyond that, lay pitch blackness. Annabelle took the penlight from the pocket of her black leather jacket, and flicked it on.
It didn't do much to dispel the darkness, but she didn't dare carry a bigger flashlight. What she was doing wasn't precisely legal. Law enforcement officers didn't understand the term "vampire hunter." But, to Annabelle, this was her job, and it was her life. Hunting the bloodsucking undead was the Heron family business. It had been since 1583, when a vampire named Roman Moretti had murdered Annabelle's great-great-et cetera grandfather Augustus Heron, and his entire family.
The Heron family was still hunting Roman Moretti nearly five hundred years later. Roman had become like the one big trout in the pond that no one could catch, yet everyone had stories about how they had almost caught him. Annabelle intended to catch him, once and for all.
Annabelle moved deeper into the alley, shifting her weight toward the toes of her boots to silence her footfalls. She heard no sounds, spotted no signs of movement. There was only a single Dumpster opposite her, next to a metal door with no lock or knob. The brick wall rising on the other side of the alley was blank, save for a fire escape dangling about a story over her head. There was nothing on the fire escape except for a flower pot. Panning her flashlight around, she walked to the end of the alley, frowning in frustration.
From behind Annabelle came a soft scuffing noise. She spun around, but she already knew it was too late. A tall, dark shape towered over her, silhouetted by the faint light from the street. Even so, she recognized Roman Moretti from his height, and the broad span of his shoulders.
"Well, well…" Roman said in a silky voice, still carrying a faint lilt of an Italian accent. "Annabelle Heron…" He seized her, so quickly that she barely registered his hand moving, before it was around her throat. "I'd know your scent anywhere."
He added this last in a lower tone that seemed to vibrate inside of Annabelle's skull, and wind its way through every cell of her body.
